Description: Published between 1888-1933. The epic & important first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, famously edited by Sir James Murray. A monument of learning. 13 volumes complete, including the three later volumes X part 1, X part 2, and Supplement which have slightly different bindings. COMPLETE. Original publisher's half maroon morocco over red cloth boards, spines gilt. All bindings are sound & quite good. Defects include 2" tear in the leather to vol. 1 spine bottom; similar sized piece chipped from vol. 6 spine bottom; two small leather tears to vol. 4 spine top resulting in small flap. Minor wear overall, especially considering age & size scarcely used. Texts are clean. PROVENANCE: Previous owner's name of book-collector Alex Pratt dated 1959 to each verso ffep. Pratt's eclectic & vast book collection consisted of approximately 10,000 volumes. He had a choice selection of antiquarian English history, theology, and books-about-books. Pratt died in September 2009 and left thousands of his best books to his alma mater UBC, and the rest have recently gone to booksellers. Each volume of this Dictionary measures approximately 10.5" wide x 13" tall. The set in length spans approximately 4 Feet Wide. Extra shipping will undoubtedly be needed.
